Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 25th for our Christmas in July Students & Teachers Art Exhibition!

This exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your talents alongside the artworks of past and present students and teachers of belArts, as well as affiliated teachers. Applicants must be a past or present student or teacher, or an affiliated teacher of belArts. You may submit works completed at belArts or that you have completed unassisted at home.

More exciting details about this exhibition will be sent out in the belArts newsletter in the coming weeks! Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity!

If you missed the start of term, there are still many classes or workshops that you can sign up for, as well as half-term or casual enrolments! Isabella offers weekly open classes in oils, graphite, and charcoal, or other mediums. These drawing and painting classes are tailored to the individual student depending on their desired pathway and as such are suitable for adults or students of 15 years+ for all skill levels. Bring your own reference photos or still life objects, or they can be provided for you.

8 x Tuesday Afternoons - Soft Pastels with Karen Christiansen - Starts on 28 July!

Explore the wonderful medium of soft pastels! Each 3-hour lesson will involve introducing a concept, a demonstration of a technique, and then completion of a small exercise, study or painting during the class, with personal feedback.

Some topics include: understanding materials, composition, understanding values, underpainting, choosing a colour palette, the importance of edges, and finishing a painting

Have fun learning how to use charcoal in a loose and expressive way to create your own unique portrait! Work from loose abstract shapes towards greater realism and detail, as well as creating a likeness in your portrait.

2 x Sundays Portrait Drawing Workshop with Wayne Van Eyk!

Explore the structure and proportions of the head and face using the Loomis method and a few other techniques. There is a focus on practicing on various head shapes and how to develop a likeness. This will include key considerations of facial features and how shadow shapes can help drive the process

This course suits complete beginners as well as intermediate artists developing these skills

6 x Thursday Afternoons Drawing Fundamentals 3:30pm - 5:30pm - with Wayne Van Eyk!

Solid drawing technique underpins all other art mediums, and can be applied to fine art paintings or other creative industries such as animation.
Wayne will take you through constructing complex 3-D and organic objects using geometric forms, understanding how light interacts with form and the use of shadow shapes to create the sense of form. Perspective and it’s applications will also be covered in this course.
This course suits 15 year plus students or adults wanting to develop their drawing skills.!

6 x Sundays - Long Session Open Class with Isabella Allis

Isabella is offering an extended 4 hour open class on a Sunday for the first time! Work on your own project in oils, graphite, charcoal, or other medium of your choice. These drawing and painting classes are tailored to the individual student depending on their desired pathway and as such are suitable for adults or students of 15 years+ for any skill level. Bring your own reference photos or still life objects, or they can be provided for you. Each Sunday class is longer than the usual week-day sessions whilst the term is shorter, being 6 weeks.

Exciting new cyanotype workshops coming in August with Iti Connor!

8 Aug (Part 1)- Only 6 places available for this session!

Discover cyanotype printing, one of the earliest photographic processes. Learn the basics of this classic technique, including a brief history, chemical safety, coating your own papers and exposing images in natural sunlight to create the distinct Prussian blue artworks.

A selection of natural and artificial objects will be provided to support your designs. Participants are encouraged to bring any plants or other materials they would like to work with. Light plant matter with some transparency or textured edges works especially well for cyanotypes, such as ferns, delicate blooms, roots or weeds. Other creative options include lace, feathers and paper cut-outs.

29 Aug (part 2) Only 6 places available for this session!

Build on your existing cyanotype skills and learn how to create more intentional, refined artworks. In this extension workshop, we will briefly revisit the essentials before moving on to developing your own cyanotype pieces.

You will have the opportunity to experiment with printing from drawings on transparencies, double exposure and toning processes to transform the classic Prussian Blue into new shades and moods.

You are welcome to bring prints from the previous Part I workshop to experiment with.

NB: you would have completed part 1 or another cyanotype workshop as a pre-requisite for this workshop.

Important notes:
Please bring a sun-safe hat.
Wear old clothes (apron optional).
In case of rain, a UV light box will be used for printing.
